Die
Kamera beobachtet, wie auf dem Platz unterhalb des Eiffelturms ein
Stra§enhndler seine Waren fr die Touristen aufbaut. In einer Textprojektion,
die parallel dazu luft, wird die Situation aus der Perspektive von Polizisten
beschrieben, die die Stra§enhndler immer wieder vom Platz zu vertreiben
versuchen. Der zweite Teil des Videos thematisiert die Geschichte des Pariser
Wahrzeichens. Auf der Weltausstellung von 1889, fr die der Eiffelturm
errichtet wurde, baute man u.a. auch eine Stra§ensituation aus Kairo und
mehrere afrikanische Drfer nach. Die Videoinstallation verbindet Alltagszenen
aus dem heutigen Paris mit einer Reflexion der Geschichte des ăMenschen-ZoosŇ.
Ein Teil des Filmtextes basiert auf dem Buch COLONISING EGYPT von Timothy
Mitchell sowie der Dokumentation MENSCHENZOOS von Eric Deroo.
The
camera observes a street vendor on the square underneath the Eiffel Tower
laying out his wares for tourists. In a parallel text projection the situation is
explained from the point of view of policemen who keep trying to drive the
vendors from the square. The second part of the video discusses the history of
the Paris landmark. During the World Fair of 1889 for which the Eiffel Tower
was erected, the organizers also reconstructed street scenes from Cairo and
african villages. The video installation combines scenes of contemporary daily
life in Paris with a reflection of the history of the human zoo. Part of the
text that appears in the film is based on the book COLONISING EGYPT by Timothy
Michell and the film MENSCHENZOOS von Eric Deroo.
